Support When It’s Needed Most

he Victim Services Unit (VSU) is a volunteer-based program serving unincorporated Adams County. The VSU operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide on-scene crisis intervention to victims and families of criminal and critical incidents.

We would like to assist you and/or your family with any of the following:

  • Understanding your rights as they pertain to the Victims’ Rights Act (VRA)
  • Assisting you and/or your family with concerns about safety and security immediately following a criminal incident
  • Answering questions about the criminal justice process and what will likely happen next
  • How to seek financial compensation and the eligibility requirements for expenses incurred as a result of a crime defined in the VRA
  • To help contact family, friends, and employers on your behalf when the words are too difficult to say
  • Explaining the emotional burden you may experience as a result of the incident
  • Assisting you with a longterm safety plan that could help you and/or your family remain safe
  • Determining which local resources will ensure that your household remains functional
  • Leaving informational material to help answer questions that may develop along the way

     

Understanding the Victim Rights Act (VRA)

Colorado’s Victim Rights Act ensures that victims of certain crimes are treated with fairness, respect, and dignity. It guarantees specific rights throughout the criminal justice process. Learn more about SB22-049 and its implications for victim support services.

Crimes Covered Under the VRA

  • First, Second, and Third Degree Assault
  • Vehicular Assault
  • Menacing
  • Criminal Attempt
  • Conspiracy
  • Criminal Solicitation
  • Accessory to any of the crimes listed above
  • Bias-Motivated Crimes
  • Child Abuse
  • Child Prostitution (including Solicitation, Pimping, Inducement, Patronizing)
  • Procurement of a Child for Sexual Exploitation
  • Any crime specifically involving at-risk persons
  • Murder
  • Manslaughter
  • Criminally Negligent Homicide
  • Vehicular Homicide
  • Human Trafficking
  • Coercion of Involuntary Servitude
  • First and Second Degree Kidnapping
  • Robbery (including Aggravated)
  • Burglary (First Degree and Second Degree Dwelling)
  • Arson (First Degree)
  • Violations issued in cases involving Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, or Stalking
  • Retaliation, Tampering, or Intimidation of a Victim or Witness
  • Retaliation Against a Judge, Juror, or Elected Official
  • Sexual Assault (Adult and Child)
  • Unlawful Sexual Contact
  • Sexual Exploitation of a Child
  • Indecent Exposure
  • Incest and Aggravated Incest
  • Posting a Private Image for Harassment or Pecuniary Gain

Note: If the victim is deceased or incapacitated, rights may be exercised by a family member or lawful representative.

The VSU relies on dedicated staff and volunteers to serve the Adams County community. Applicants should possess strong communication skills, empathy, and a commitment to supporting victims of crime. Bilingual skills and relevant experience are a plus.
